Take a picture and it'll last longer!

As of this writing I have 17118 files in my "photos" folder on my computer. These totals to 19 GiB and are mostly pictures taken by me from 2001 to now. The larger portion of these are also tagged by content and I've removed all the failed ones.

Just so you all know.

How's your photo folder?

Crawling forwards

2009-11-14 15:01 by Nailbar
Ding! Level up!

Today my 6½ month old daughter learned to crawl.

I guess it's time to start moving stuff from the floor to higher places then.

I'm going to run out of ideas soon

But here's another row of icons.

Note that the detailed ones doesn't really look like me. I'm more skinny and have a smaller head. Nor do I own any green smiley-face sweaters.

Also. Click here for an animation on the drawing of that dragon picture. Ooh! Moving pictures!

Wanna hear about my Vista experience?

2009-11-06 14:10 by Nailbar
So here's a short list of what needed to be done in order to install Windows Vista on a new HP Compaq dx2400 Microtower computer. I installed Kubuntu on it too, partly for comparison, but mainly because I think Windows sucks ass.

Windows Vista Business 32bit

Kubuntu 9.10 32bit

Installation

  • Boot into installation CD
  • Write product key and enter installation data
  • Reboot
  • Continue installing
  • Reboot
  • Reboot
  • Write product key again

Installation

  • Boot into installation CD
  • Install
  • Reboot

Updates and other installs

  • Install LAN driver which needed to be downloaded from HP's web site on another computer and moved to this computer on a USB-stick
  • Windows Update
  • Reboot
  • Apparently Windows Update failed to update the graphics drivers
  • Windows Update
  • Reboot
  • Windows Update - failed to update graphics drivers
  • Download graphics drivers from HP's web site as suggested by Windows Update - HP's drivers also failed to install
  • Download and install HP's chipset drivers - got the message "This program might not have installed correctly" with the options "Try again" and "Yes it has, you don't know shit" - I chose the latter
  • Try to install graphics drivers - failed
  • Download and install BIOS upgrade for computer from HP's site
  • Reboot - quick error message regarding BIOS but I never had time to read it
  • Try to install graphics drivers - failed
  • Gave up for now
  • After I get graphic drivers fixed I'll still need to install antivirus and all the different programs manually and perform multiple reboots after that

Updates and other installs

  • apt-get update
  • apt-get upgrade
  • apt-get install all the programs I want
  • Reboot - because kernel was upgraded
  • Done

You probably get what I'm trying to tell you by now.

I also might add that we're talking about a factory built computer package with Vista-ready stickers all over it. Funny you'd need Internet access in order to get Internet access for it. Funny it's not Vista-ready even though it claims so. So funny I'm ready to cry.

Update

My story continues. Apparently Vista didn't manage to remove the old graphic drivers in order to install the new ones, so I had to remove them manually. So here's the rest of my tale:

  • Remove old graphics drivers
  • Reboot
  • Update
  • Reboot
  • Update - Vista tried to upgrade the new graphics drivers to an older version - fail, but that update didn't bother me any more
  • Update
  • Update - Service Pack 2
  • Reboot
  • Update
  • Reboot
  • Windows is up to date!

Summary

It took two reboots to get from an empty computer to a fully working and up to date Linux environment. About an hour worth of time, if I recall correctly.

It took ten reboots to get Windows Vista installed and up to date. I'll still have to install the anti virus and all the programs I actually want to use. How much time this took is anyones guess. Actually.. Not as much as I expected. I think it took about two to three hours or so. But still.

Will probably upgrade to either 7 or XP. It came with Vista.

No drawing for a while

Apparently they dropped support for my graphics tablet (Aiptek Media Tablet 14000U) with the latest Ubuntu release. That's annoying. I was really happy with it using Linux MINT 7 which was based on Ubuntu 8.10, I think.

Why remove something that works?
