Linux MINT here I come!

2009-04-10 13:26 by Nailbar
If you remember alla the problems I had earlier with Linux MINT ,see post [Forbidden fruit tastes like mint], here's an update...

Instead of MINT I figured I'd try to install something else, like Kubuntu. When the DVD writer didn't recognize the empty CD I put in it I started to suspect there was some kind of hardware error causing all this. So I took everything out, and put everything back in, and tried to install Linux MINT one more time. This time it actually gave me an error message at 56%, or something like that.

Apparently the problem was caused by a broken DVD station which for some reason just didn't want to go beyond a surten point of something. Anyhow, I replaced it with an old CD station I had lying around and BINGO! So now I'm getting used to the new system, upgrading packages as I write this. So far so good.

Spacing in front of my screensaver

2009-04-09 10:14 by Nailbar
Current status: spacing, and watching a space game play it self. I just updated the [MiniDuel] game to version 1.4, and now I just sit here and marvel at all those small ships zipping across the screen, shooting at each other.

The latest update made the AI smarter, and more interesting. All AI controlled ships have eight "genes" which control how they behave in different situations. For example; one gene dictates how close the ship will get to its opponet before it turns around. All genes are randomized so every ship is different. Some are good att hitting their target, some flee as soon as they see the enemy, and some are just plain stupid.

With this last update I added a new gene, number eight, which tells the AI how much damage the ship can take before it should start picking up health packs.

I just love to sit and watch them little fellas. You can often see what they are thinking.

At this moment the game is for Linux only, but there are plans for a Windows release which are getting closer all the time...

The swimbots are swarming again

2009-04-06 10:09 by Nailbar
I'm still waiting for these buggers to evolve enough to live with the green food dots in harmony without big swings in population all the time. Just look at the graph. Oh well. It used to be worse.

And for those interested; the program is called Gene Pool, and is downloadable for free. You just start with a random world of worthless creatures and with a bit of luck some of them will survive and evolve into something better.

Plenty of fun

I found my stash! With that I'm referring to my old website and all the random games I've posted there. This is from the time when I had a lot more time on my hands, and was just learning all these new programming languages.

Nature pics

2009-04-03 23:05 by Nailbar
I don't know if you can call these both "Nature pics". The grass is just simple kitty grass on our dining table.

The duck was interesting since it was really close to a pair of swans. I knew swans are a bit picky when it comes to neighburs and at the exact time I mentioned this to my wife one of the swans gave the duck a poke. Too bad I didn't get that with the camera.

I like the grass picture. It kinda looks like it's in front of a moon, or something. The moon shape is actually a small piece of metal in the background which glittered in the sunlight.
