I will never go back

2010-02-09 22:06 by Nailbar
Funny thing how I alway say the same thing whenever switching from one computer desktop to another. Let's take this from the start:

Short version:

  • I started with Windows.
  • I found Slackware Linux (KDE 3.5) and will never go back.
  • I found Linux MINT (GNOME) and will never go back.
  • I found KDE4 (Kubuntu) and will never go back.

Funny how I hated everything Ubuntu and Gnome back in the days when I was a proud Slackware user. See what happens when you get a kid and suddenly don't have any spare time for tinkering any more.

Long version:

  • I started with Windows (95, 98, ME, XP - the jumps between these doesn't count because it was never about choise).
  • I found Slackware and KDE 3.5 - and I said I will never go back. Didn't like GNOME. Didn't like Ubuntu.
  • After Slackware 9, 10 and 11 I eventually found that I needed something that requires less tinkering.
  • I found Linux MINT. It had all the ease of Ubuntu but without the kumbaya. GNOME turned out to be alright with desktop effects turned on. Again, I will never go back.
  • MINT was great. It was instant. It was perfekt on first boot after install. Still. I missed KDE. KDE4 was not yet usable.
  • I found KDE4. I will never go back. The funny thing here is that I had to switch to Kubuntu to get it because I didn't want to wait for MINT to catch up with the new release. At this point I also realized that it doesn't actu-- oh heck. This is too long. I'll write a short version and then go to bed. Congrats if you managed to read all this.

Sofia and the snow

2010-02-07 16:18 by Nailbar
And here are some pictures of the little one where she plays in snow for the first time ever.

Well, actually we did let her sit in the snow earlier too but back then she didn't really seem to get it.

Last, but not least, this is what it looks like when I tried to get some work done at home.

This is why they invented the work place.

Snow landscapes

Took a few pics of some... snow. There's plenty of that at this moment, but still.

I also tested this interesting way of bringing out the third dimension by switching between two pictures all the time. Or something. It turned out alright, I quess.

Changes are coming

2010-02-02 12:19 by Nailbar
I've been busy working on a replacement for the content management system the Nailbox is built upon. At this moment I'm using Nailblog 1.2.19. It was built from the ground up and evolved into what you see here. You can check the earliest posts on this blog to see how it started.

As time moved on I added more and more features to what initially was just a simple blog. Now I have a file manager, link collections, pages, user management, RSS feeds. Almost from the very beginning I decided to make it completely modular too, which was a good decision.

I also released the code for the Nailblog for anyone to use and develop further. The code is now in use on several other sites as well.

Now I'm dealing with old code. I find elementary things in the core of the entire system which I should have done differently. For instance; there's no support for different languages, there is no backup system if a module breaks, etc. Also the code gets messy when it gets old.

So why not write a new version completely from scratch?

This I did. But it took a while. A few false starts, long pauses between updates, etc. Recently I got up to speed and I now have a working system featuring the absolute essentials for blogging.

I still have a lot to do but at this rate there's a good chance I'll begin migrating my own blog to the new system this spring.

Here's the developement version: http://81.22.244.173/~martin/nailblog2/

Try to break it and then tell me about it ;-)

KDE4.4 most is well, but not all

2010-01-20 13:58 by Nailbar
I upgraded to KDE4.4 which is in beta at least for Kubuntu at the moment of this writing. All is well and the features are wonderful.

Except for a few things.

  • Kopete can't seem to be able to send message to other machines using Kopete, Kubuntu and KDE4.4.
  • Skype crashes when trying to open the chat window.

This means I have no means to talk with my wife because I'm using the same installation on both home computer and work computer. Oh wait. What's this? Cellphone!!!

The Kopete problem solved itself. It was apparently temporary.

The Skype problem was solved by switching to the manually installed static version. The one from Medibuntu was apparently buggy for some reason.

All is well now.
