So apparently my wife's old laptop is showing its age and the amount of ram is no longer sufficient for running Windows XP (which it came with) without caching furiously. Even when no additional programs except AVG Free (antivirus) are running.
I've been trying to get Linux running on it for some time now but for some reason Debian would never successfully install and Kubuntu gets as far as to the login screen but no further. I tried Slackware command line only too, but the problems seems to be connected to a not-too-well supported graphics card which borks even the command prompt. For instance, the Kubuntu login screen also believed the screen was 1680x1050 rather than 1024x768, or something like that.
Then I tried LXDE.
Now I'm happily writing this from this old laptop running Ubuntu with LXDE and everything is working great. After some googling I got the screen size working by manually specifying it in /etc/X11/xorg.conf, and the KDE login crash was due to hardware acceleration. With that turned off it worked fine, but Plasma still ate up all the memory so as soon as any other program was executed it would start swapping.
Ta-daa!
