Speaking of earthquakes

Here are some before-and-after clips from San Francisco just before and after the great earthquake in 1905:

Ogg video

So now that some browsers support Ogg video out-of-the box it was easy to just add a handler for the .ogv file ending and implement it in the same function that handles file viewing.

So without further ado: BoxCar2d-gen784.ogv

This is where it ended up before I left it running over the weekend.

So I continued from where the video ended and left it running over the night with a new terrain. The next day it had dumped one of the wheels and made it really stream lined and fast. Boring end where it just gets stuck, though.

This random painting

I don't know what I started with, and I don't know what I ended up with. Never the less, here it is.

The bat-mo-space-ship

Had to get up in the middle of the night to draw a picture I had in my head, again.

And now I really want to make a game where you fly this and shot at whatever.

After I finished drawing I noticed it kinda looks like the batmobile, which actually is no surprise since I was aiming for a sport car kinda look. Instead of wheels I'd just use turrets and docking ports.

Let's see if I'll add more and maybe makes a 3D model too... Not much time for this stuff now-a-days.

Wallpapers again

I got a working Internet now. Real cable and all. The wireless broadband wasn't for me and it was an experience I'd rather forget.

So anyhow, the first thing I did, of course, was update to the latest Kubuntu and Lubuntu versions. And with fresh new desktops (I always install from scratch) I once again had the urge to make new wallpapers.

So this is what came out of it.

Linux saves the day - finally

So apparently my wife's old laptop is showing its age and the amount of ram is no longer sufficient for running Windows XP (which it came with) without caching furiously. Even when no additional programs except AVG Free (antivirus) are running.

I've been trying to get Linux running on it for some time now but for some reason Debian would never successfully install and Kubuntu gets as far as to the login screen but no further. I tried Slackware command line only too, but the problems seems to be connected to a not-too-well supported graphics card which borks even the command prompt. For instance, the Kubuntu login screen also believed the screen was 1680x1050 rather than 1024x768, or something like that.

Then I tried LXDE.

Now I'm happily writing this from this old laptop running Ubuntu with LXDE and everything is working great. After some googling I got the screen size working by manually specifying it in /etc/X11/xorg.conf, and the KDE login crash was due to hardware acceleration. With that turned off it worked fine, but Plasma still ate up all the memory so as soon as any other program was executed it would start swapping.
